SAN ANTONIO — For three seasons, I was frequently embedded with the Golden State Warriors as SportsCenter’s Warriors correspondent. It was the first three seasons of Golden State’s ongoing dynastic run from 2014-15 through 2016-17 and naturally involved numerous conversations, many of them on camera, with Stephen Curry.
In my old age, regrettably, I only get a few opportunities every season to hook up somewhere with the Warriors’ traveling circus, but it’s always a journalistic pleasure. The reason: In my 30 seasons on the NBA beat, I have rarely encountered players and coaches who are so prepared to field our questions and respond with candor. Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson. Steve Kerr and Bob Myers. Ron Adams and Bruce Fraser from Kerr’s bench. They all tell you a lot more than most.
Among the highlights of my trip to South Texas last week for the Spurs’ one-night return to the Alamodome was the chance to speak to Steph in what has become more of an annual one-on-one visit as opposed to the many times I annoyingly stuck an ESPN mic in his face after a big game. We covered a lot of good ground as his 35th birthday approaches on March 14 … including the Warriors’ bumpy season so far, sustaining his elite level of play, finally winning an NBA Finals MVP and the Olympic gold medal he’s still chasing.
