The Magic made Shaquille O'Neal the first player in team history to see his jersey retired, deciding it was time to celebrate the four seasons they had him (and finally move past their messy divorce)
I believe Howard was a better candidate than Shaq for having his jersey retired in Orlando. In my eyes, Howard is more iconic to the Magic franchise. The departure of key players from a team often stirs emotions among fans, especially when the team hasn't had much success to celebrate. From that standpoint, I can see how Shaq’s departure might feel like a slap in the face to Magic fans. Comparing the impact of Shaq leaving and LeBron's move to Miami is subjective, especially when looking solely at the immediate free agency period. Both were significant events in NBA history, each leaving a lasting impact on the teams involved. While LeBron's return to Cleveland and eventual championship adds complexity, IMO the fact that Lebron came back and won one for the Cavs later don't compute in this equation but it's understandable to view both Shaq's departure and LeBron's move to Miami as pivotal moments. In the end, whether one considers Shaq or LeBron-to-Miami as more significant is a matter of personal perspective. Both events carry weight in NBA history, and either opinion is valid. 🤷♀️
Not a big fan of the Magic doing this - Shaq broke the franchise, and my teenage heart in 1996. But there is something to be said for letting the past go.
However, hanging a jersey in the rafters that he never wore just continues to confirm how poverty this franchise is.
Felt like the Magic did it because they have no one else. Retiring a number after 4 seasons and your franchise was a footnote in his career? Just odd to me.
It was only a messy divorce in that the Magic thought they were smarter than they were and that they had more leverage than they really did. It was a mistake they almost instantly regretted. It should not have taken this long for them to retire his jersey. No single player has had the impact on Orlando and the Magic as Shaq did. TMac and Dwight came close but fell short for different reasons.

The NBA had seismic changes during summer of ‘96, none more significant than Shaq leaving and initiating an era of player movement during free agency.
