The exodus of players departing mid-stream for the NBA (and the reasons why) dominated G League Showcase discussion rather than trade talk
Great stuff Marc, you know I’m here for a Sundiata Gaines recollection. I know people like to have fun with these computer generated sounding names, but in reality there’s little difference between these callups and spots 12-17 already on NBA rosters. It’s obviously the rotation guys being out that’s the problem.
Thanks, Marc, for the inside look at how Covid (and all these roster call-ups) impacted the showcase. To my knowledge, you are the only one who had a report on that dynamic. Talk about an unprecedented time…
Amongst the chaos, however, new opportunities emerged and it is kind of awesome to see all those players getting a shot on the biggest stage possible.
It’s been quite remarkable to see the growth of the G-League in such a short time, as well. I remember, not too long ago, it was considered a warning sign if drafted players were sent there. Now, it almost seems like a rite of passage for most of them to get some seasoning on their off days.
One day, I hope to see the league become a full-fledged farm system. You touched on it in your green room, but would be awesome if the compensation could be increased and more 2-way contracts could be offered to prevent players from going overseas.
Perhaps one day, my hopes will be realized. Rooting for all those players who have found their way into the NBA to make the most of it—including Isaiah Thomas for my Lakers.
For a town that thrives on storytelling, IT’s journey is fitting for the big screen. Here’s hoping for a Hollywood ending… 🙌🏽🤞🏽
