A first in the history of the Tuesday Newsletter Extravaganza: My link to a short burst of survey questions that I'd be hugely grateful for you to answer to help us all get ready for the new season
Hubie is an incredible advertisement for not letting your age dictate your life. I do find it funny how heβs become a defender of NBA referees as a broadcaster given how he could be as a coach.
Living in Lakeland, FL as a young lad, my Dad, who lived and lives in Louisville (former PGA, now senior PGA caddy) would buy me a box of basketball cards every Christmas. to get me interested in the game.
It worked.
In Florida, in 1977, we didnβt have a pro team, but I knew (thanks to the tv listings) that this Channel 17 would show Atlanta pro sports. Being a fan of all sports, but now keenly interested in the NBA, i started watching the Atlanta Hawks.
On the sidelines was a permed out wild man, hollering every thought that passed through his brilliant skull at anything that moved on the court, usually in colorful language. The Omni was usually such that you could hear Hubie, and his library of profanities, very clearly.
I loved it and that team. They became mine. I used to pretend I was John Drew, Fast Eddie, and Tree.
I was very upset when Hubie was no longer coach and unfairly held it against Kevin Loughery. I had already lost Sparky Anderson as a Reds fan and losing Hubie was a rough indoctrination to the business of sports.
I have loved hearing Hubie through the years. My all time favorite NBA coach.
Mr Stein, love the survey! Mine is complete. Looking forward to the results. I do learn from the best though (you) regarding seeking out credit when it is due, and although I did no work whatsoever on the survey (thanks Dave the sociologist!), I was the commenter on Jul 18th from a Great Wolf Lodge in Colorado Springs who suggested it!

One of my very favorite parts of my beginnings as an NBA fan, was tuning my UHF to 17 and learning new curse words, courtesy of Coach Hubie Brown.
I saw your Note on this, too. Need more of the story.

Much appreciated, Daniel.
PS -- I'm old now and forget stuff and July 18th was a long, long time ago!
All good! To make it up to me, next time you see Dirk - tell him he's the greatest.
He's all right I guess ...
